Mfuwe Lodge, Zambia, Africa where the elephants roam freely in the hotel lobby

Have you considered going on an exotic honeymoon? If you wish to have an unforgettable encounter with nature on your special celebration, we suggest Zambia, Africa. The gorgeous, untouched look of South Luangwa National Park is perfect for such a treat. There are 18 thatched chalets, all of which overlook one of the lodge's two lagoons, which attract abundant game activity during the day and at night. You will be sure to see animals like hippo, elephant, buffalo, leopard and lion make their way to the lagoons to drink as the watch in surrounding areas dries out in the hot seasons. Take a day safari to see all the sites, or a romantic night safari to get the African feel. You will be with an experienced guide who can answer all your questions and point out things you might otherwise miss. You may even choose to take an exciting walking safari to view or track animals on foot with armed scout as protection. Mfuwe Lodge is one of the few places in the South Luangwa National Park that stays open during the Green Season. During this time the landscape in the valley changes into a lush green environment that attracts Wild Dogs as well as many species of migrating African and European birds.

If you would like study the unique Zambian animals and plants you will see while on safari, the hotel provides a reference library containing more than 300 wildlife books and videos. However, the most exciting and eccentric view you can get is in the base camp in the center of the resort. If you visit Mfuwe Lodge during late November you can view wild elephants roam right through the building and interact with the staff at the reception desk. This 10 elephant herd is wild so the resort insists that guests have something between them and the herd, even though the animals have never harmed anyone. 

Why do these same 10 elephants return each year? Mfuwe Lodge happens to have been built next to a mango tree that one family of pachyderms have always visited when the fruit ripens. When they returned one year and found the luxury accommodation in the way, they simply walked through reception. ndy Hogg, 44, director at the Bushcamp Company that runs the Lodge, has lived in South Luangwa National Park since 1982. But in all his years of dealing with wild animals he has never seen such intimate interaction between man and beast. 'This is the only place in the world where elephants freely get so close to humans,' says the 44-year-old. 'The elephants start coming through base camp in late November of each year to eat the mangos from our trees. 'When they are ripe they come through and they stand about for four to six weeks coming back each day or second day to eat the mangos.'So we suggest if you're getting married in the fall, definitely check out Mfuwe Lodge. But make your reservations early because the resort fills up quickly because of the unique experience the elephants bring to the base camp, and the resort as a whole.
